Reading back through a body of work to find the gaps a coherent account left behind — threads that were abandoned deliberately, overtaken by momentum, or never recognized as threads in the first place.
Focused work generates material beyond its own scope. Conversations produce asides that turn out to matter. Creative work throws off fragments. Structured narratives leave things on the cutting room floor. Some of this material is genuinely disposable. But some of it is pre-coherence — it will eventually feed into understanding, but it hasn't found its place yet. The cognitive act is distinguishing the two and keeping the live material in a form where it can be picked back up.
This stance complements interpretive synthesis. Interpretive synthesis builds a coherent account. Gap reading asks what that account left out. Synthesis wants closure; gap reading resists it, asking: what did the narrative smooth away? The tension between them is productive — you need both the coherent picture and the inventory of what it missed.
The dangling-thread-review skill is the workflow that uses this stance. Gap reading is the underlying cognitive move: reading the gaps left by a narrative, rather than adding more detail to the narrative itself.
Some threads resolve within a session. Others persist across sessions — they weren't resolved last time, and they might not be resolved this time either, but they shouldn't be silently dropped. Keeping them visible is an act of intellectual honesty.
The relational structure
A therapist at the end of a session, reviewing what the client said in passing. The client mentioned something offhand — a name, a reaction, a metaphor — and the conversation moved on. The therapist notes it because those throwaway moments are often where the important material lives. It wasn't that the client avoided the topic. It's that neither of them knew it was important yet.
A researcher maintaining a "things I noticed but can't explain yet" file. Anomalous data points, unexpected patterns, things that didn't fit the hypothesis. Most will turn out to be noise. But the ones that aren't noise are often where the next paper comes from. Keeping the file is an act of intellectual honesty — refusing to let the current narrative consume everything.
A journalist going back through their interview notes after filing the story. Quotes they didn't use. Connections they didn't make. A thread the interviewee kept returning to that didn't fit the article's frame. The story is published, but the notes contain material that might matter for the next story — or might reframe this one.
A composer at the end of a writing session, reviewing the melodic fragments and harmonic ideas that surfaced while working on the main piece. They weren't developed because the focus was elsewhere. Some are dead ends. But some are seeds — themes that will return in a later movement, or the kernel of something that doesn't have a home yet.
When this stance applies
- Session checkpoints and saves (reviewing the conversation for what the trajectory update missed)
- Session transitions (gathering threads before rest or close)
- Any moment where significant ground has been covered and the agent suspects the narrative of what happened is cleaner than reality
- When the user says something like "are we forgetting anything?" or "what did we leave on the table?"
What this stance is not
- Interpretive synthesis (which builds the coherent account — this stance interrogates it)
- Summary (which compresses without looking for what's missing)
- Triage (which prioritizes known items — this stance surfaces items that aren't on the list yet)
- Task tracking (which monitors known work items — this stance finds the unknown ones)
Composition notes
Gap reading uses the output of interpretive synthesis as its starting point — you need the coherent account in order to see what it left out.
Feeds naturally into diagnostic questioning when a surfaced thread needs the user's situated knowledge to evaluate. "I noticed you mentioned X early in the session and we never came back to it — is that something that matters, or was it superseded?"
Composes with collaborative grounding because the agent can find the threads but often can't judge which ones are still live. The user's situated knowledge — what has energy, what was silently abandoned, what connects to things outside the conversation — is essential for the final assessment.
