Fatigue Management & Night Driving
Driver fatigue is one of the most preventable causes of CMV accidents. FMCSA HOS rules are minimum requirements — they don't guarantee safe driving. This skill covers the science + practical management.
The science of fatigue
Circadian rhythm
Human bodies operate on a roughly 24-hour cycle. Performance peaks at:
- 8-10 AM (morning alertness)
- 3-5 PM (afternoon alertness)
Performance troughs:
- 2-6 AM (circadian low) — performance equivalent to legal drunk driving in extreme cases
- 1-3 PM (afternoon dip)
Drivers operating during circadian lows are at significantly higher accident risk.
Sleep debt
A driver can be "legally compliant" with HOS but still fatigued:
- Required: 10 hours off-duty per shift
- But required sleep: typically 7-9 hours of actual sleep
- Time spent off-duty NOT sleeping (eating, calling family, watching TV) doesn't count
A driver who takes 10 hours off but only sleeps 5 = sleep debt accumulating.
Microsleeps
Brief unconscious episodes lasting 0.5-10 seconds:
- Driver doesn't realize it happened
- Eyes may stay open
- Brain fully shut down
- Vehicle continues at speed (catastrophic at highway speed)
- Common at 2-5 AM
- Common after sleep debt > 24 hours
A microsleep at 70 mph = 100 feet of unconscious driving. Often fatal.
Recognizing fatigue
In yourself (driver):
- Yawning excessively
- Blinking frequently
- Difficulty focusing
- Eyes burning
- Drifting in lane
- Missing exits
- Forgetting last few miles
- Restless feet / fidgeting
In others (dispatcher / observer):
- Driver appears droopy-eyed
- Slow responses on dispatch calls
- Forgetting routine information
- Voice changes (slurred or muffled)
- Reports of unusual incidents (near-misses, hard braking)
Night driving challenges
Night driving has multiple layered risks:
- Reduced visibility — 50% less visual information available
- Glare from headlights — slows recovery from bright lights
- Circadian low — body wants to sleep
- Other drivers also fatigued — more drunk/drowsy drivers on the road
- Less help available — fewer first responders, fewer stations open
- Cumulative fatigue — multi-day shifts compound
Best practices for night driving:
- Pre-trip: 7-9 hours of sleep BEFORE the night shift
- Strategic caffeine (limit late night, use early in shift)
- Bright lights in cab to stay alert
- Stop frequently (every 1-2 hours, walk + stretch)
- Have a co-driver if possible
- Don't push through extreme fatigue (pull over + nap if needed)
HOS rules vs actual fatigue management

HOS rules establish minimum safety. Carrier should establish:
- Maximum daily driving for night drivers (e.g., 10 hours not 11)
- Limited consecutive night shifts (e.g., max 3-4 in a row)
- Voluntary rest schedule when feasible
- Strategic napping authorization during long trips
Fatigue Risk Management System (FRMS)
A formal program some larger fleets implement:
Components:
- Policy + procedures — written
- Driver education — training on recognizing + managing fatigue
- Schedule design — minimize circadian risk (limit night shifts)
- Self-reporting culture — drivers can call off without penalty if fatigued
- Drowsiness monitoring — telematics-based detection
- Sleep apnea screening + treatment — clinical layer
- Wellness program — nutrition, exercise, sleep hygiene
- Incident analysis — fatigue identified as contributing factor
FRMS is voluntary but increasingly required by major shippers + insurers.
Drowsiness detection technology
Telematics + cab cameras can detect:
- Eye closure rate (PERCLOS) — % of time eyes closed; > 13% indicates drowsiness
- Head pose deviation — head down, drifting
- Lane drift — vehicle drifting toward lane edges
- Brake/acceleration patterns — micro-corrections
- Reaction time — slow response to brake light ahead
When detected, system can:
- Alert driver (audible, visual, haptic)
- Alert dispatcher
- Log for safety manager review
- Suggest rest stop

Sleep apnea + fatigue
Obstructive sleep apnea is the #1 cause of chronic driver fatigue:
- Driver may sleep 8 hours but get poor-quality sleep

Screening + treatment (CPAP) significantly improves driving safety:
- Reduces crash rate by 50-70% in some studies
- Required for some drivers per medical examiner discretion
Practical fatigue management techniques
For drivers:
Before shift
- 7-9 hours of sleep
- Hydrate (not just caffeine)
- Light meal (not heavy)
- Mental prep (review route, expected challenges)
During shift
- Strategic caffeine (early shift, not late)
- Hydrate
- Light snacks every 2-3 hours
- 15-min walks at stops
- Vary mental engagement (music, podcast, hands-free conversation)
- Bright cab lights at night
- Cool temperature (helps alertness)
Recognize + respond to fatigue
- Pull over BEFORE microsleep
- Brief nap (20-30 min, not longer)
- Walk + stretch
- Cool water on face
- Don't try to push through
Recovery
- 1-2 days off after long shifts
- Catch up on sleep (don't try in one night; spread over 2-3)
- Exercise + nutrition
Common fatigue management mistakes
- Treating HOS as the goal. Compliance ≠ safety.
- No fatigue education for drivers. Drivers think "I'll know when I'm tired."
- Punishing fatigue self-reports. Drivers stop reporting; just push through.
- Long-haul OTR without sleep apnea screening. Major risk.
- Forcing night driving on day-shift drivers. Circadian mismatch.
- Caffeine + amphetamines abuse. Performance worse than no stimulant.
- Ignoring sleep environment quality. Driver sleeps in noisy truck stop = poor sleep.
