Federal vision standards under § 391.41(b)(10) require distance visual acuity of at least 20/40 in each eye with or without correction, and field of vision of at least 70 degrees in horizontal meridian in each eye. Drivers not meeting these standards may apply for the FMCSA Vision Exemption Program.
Federal vision baseline
- 20/40 distance acuity in each eye, with or without corrective lenses
- 70 degrees horizontal field of vision in each eye
- Ability to recognize colors of traffic signals + devices showing standard red, green, amber
Monocular driver eligibility
A driver with vision loss in one eye may continue commercial driving if:
- Acuity in the better eye meets 20/40 distance + 70-degree field
- Has been monocular for at least 1 year
- No degenerative condition affecting the better eye
- Demonstrates good driving record with current vision status
Vision Exemption Program
For drivers below the 20/40 standard:
- Apply to FMCSA Vision Exemption Program
- Provide medical history + current ophthalmologist's report
- Demonstrate 3 years of safe CMV driving with current vision status
- Annual renewal of exemption
- Annual ophthalmologist exam confirms continued ability

Pitfall
A driver with a vision exemption who is hired by a new carrier — the exemption is portable but must be re-documented in the new DQF. New employer must file new exemption with FMCSA showing continued employer awareness.
