A crash is a high-stress event for a driver, even with no injuries. How a carrier handles the next 30 days affects driver retention, safety culture, mental health, and legal exposure.
Immediate (0–24 hours)
Scene safety
The driver's first job: get themselves and others safe. Then call 911 if injuries, then dispatch.
Carrier first response
- Confirm driver is safe — check on driver before anything else
- Get scene details — location, severity, injuries, other vehicles, weather
- Send safety/ops — if local and serious, dispatch a carrier rep
- Notify insurance — most policies require notice within 24 hours
- Photograph scene — driver should take photos before vehicles moved (if safe to do so)
- Begin investigation — per accident-investigation-playbook skill
DOT-required post-accident drug/alcohol testing (49 CFR 382.303)

Driver care
A driver who's been in a serious crash often experiences:
- Acute stress reaction (intrusive thoughts, sleep disruption, hypervigilance)
- Anxiety about returning to wheel
- Financial worry (lost pay)
- Concern about job status
Carrier response:
- Confirm pay — most carriers pay during initial off-time, communicate this immediately
- EAP referral — Employee Assistance Program offers crisis counseling within 24 hr
- No interrogation early — let the driver decompress before deep investigation
- Check in daily — supervisor brief call, no agenda, just "how are you doing"
- Family notification of return plan — keep family in the loop with driver's permission
Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) screening
A serious crash — especially with fatality or significant injury — can trigger PTSD. ~15–25% of drivers in fatal-injury crashes develop PTSD symptoms.
Watch for:
- Avoidance of driving / specific routes
- Flashbacks
- Sleep disturbance
- Withdrawal from family/colleagues
- Substance use increase
- Emotional numbing
Refer to EAP. Don't push return-to-driving until mental health professional clears.

- Ride-along with senior driver
- Documented coaching plan in DQF
CDL fitness-for-duty re-evaluation
If injury, medication change, or mental-health concern, the medical examiner re-evaluates:
- Has CDL physical certification still valid?
- Any new medications conflict with DOT requirements?
- Vision / cognitive impact?
- Mental-health clearance if concerns present?
Driver cannot resume safety-sensitive duties until medical examiner clears. Document in DQF.

Driver retention post-crash
A driver who feels supported through a crash often becomes the most loyal employee on the roster. A driver who feels abandoned leaves and tells everyone.
Specific moves that retain:
- Same-day check-in from owner / GM
- Pay continuity messaging
- EAP enrollment
- Phased return option
- Public peer support (cards, GoFundMe if family affected)
- 6-month follow-up "how are you really doing"
- Acknowledgment that crash was hard
Common mistakes
- Treating the driver as adversary from minute 1 — destroys trust
- Pushing return-to-duty too fast — driver re-traumatizes on the road
- Skipping EAP referral — missing the leverage point
- Insurance-driven investigation without driver care — driver feels like asset, not person
- No documentation of phased return — exposure for "return-to-duty too soon" claims
- Family notified by media — preventable PR disaster
- Letting the crash define the driver — even good drivers crash; coaching > labeling
