Used Vehicle Compliance Verification at Purchase
A used vehicle should be inspected and verified compliant before integrating into the fleet. Hidden issues become carrier liability immediately.
Pre-purchase inspection
- Annual DOT inspection on file (within 12 months)
- Recent service records
- Title clean (no salvage, no flood)
- Mileage verification
- Inspection report from independent mechanic
Documents to obtain
- Annual inspection certificate
- Service history (oil changes, brake work, major repairs)
- Title (clean)
- VIN check (CARFAX or equivalent for commercial vehicles)
- Prior carrier's DOT number history (to check for major incidents)
Hidden issues to look for
- Frame damage hidden by paint
- Engine block welding or shoddy repairs
- Brake friction surface excessive wear
- Tire age (DOT date code) regardless of tread
- Suspension wear (especially leaf springs)
- Wheel-end leaks not addressed
- Lighting fixtures recently swapped
Post-purchase actions
- Full DOT inspection by your mechanic
- Brake adjustment check
- Tire age verification (consider re-tiring soon)
- Maintenance file setup (start fresh with PM schedule)
- Lighting + reflector verification
- ELD installation (if needed)
- Annual inspection if more than 12 months old
What NOT to skip
- Verify VIN matches title and registration
- Verify accident history (police record, insurance claim history)
- Verify any FMCSA violations against the vehicle
- Verify previous carrier had no compliance issues
