Common Misconfigurations & Verification

• Backups not actually offline/immutable: a playbook that lists "offline backups" but the backup server is domain-joined and reachable over SMB gets encrypted with everything else. Verify backups are air-gapped or immutable (S3 Object Lock, hardened repo) and that the 3-2-1 rule is met, not just claimed.
• Shadow-copy deletion not blocked: the prevention checklist omits hardening against vssadmin delete shadows, wbadmin delete catalog, and bcdedit /set recoveryenabled no. Confirm a GPO/EDR rule blocks or alerts on these LOLBins before relying on local recovery points.
• Recovery restores a still-infected point: restoring from a backup taken after initial access (but before encryption) reintroduces the dropper/persistence. Verify the restore point predates patient-zero compromise, and rebuild from clean images rather than decrypting in place.
• krbtgt reset skipped or done once: the playbook must reset krbtgt twice ~12h apart; a single reset leaves forged golden tickets valid.
• Verification, not documentation: run a tabletop against the playbook and an actual test restore to confirm RTO/RPO are real numbers. Confirm out-of-band comms work when AD/email is down, and that contact lists and IOC-blocking steps were exercised within the last year.
