Overview

Splunk's Threat Intelligence Framework in Enterprise Security enables SOC teams to automatically correlate indicators of compromise (IOCs) against security events. The framework ingests threat feeds, normalizes indicators into KV Store collections, and uses lookup-based correlation searches to flag matching events. Splunk Threat Intelligence Management centralizes collection, normalization, and enrichment from multiple sources, reducing triage time by providing analysts with immediate context.

Common Misconfigurations & Verification

• Lookup join field never matches: the correlation searches do lookup ip_threat_intel_lookup ip as dest_ip and lookup domain_threat_intel_lookup domain as query. The #1 failure is a normalization mismatch — the KV Store stores 1.2.3.4 but events carry 1.2.3.4:443, or the feed stores domains FQDN-lowercased while query arrives with a trailing dot or mixed case. The lookup returns null, where isnotnull(threat_type) drops everything, and the search runs clean with zero notables. Test with | inputlookup ip_threat_intel_lookup | head 5 then a | lookup ... | where isnotnull() against a known-matching event.
• File-hash field shape: lookup file_hash_intel_lookup file_hash as Hashes fails because Sysmon Hashes is a multi-value string like SHA256=ABC...,MD5=... not a bare hash — extract the algorithm-specific field (SHA256) first, and match case (KV Store lowercase vs Sysmon uppercase hex).
• KV Store vs CSV / confidence filter: domain_confidence > 70 silently excludes feeds that don't populate confidence (null is not > 70); and a lookup defined as external_type = kvstore returns nothing if the collection name in transforms.conf doesn't match collections.conf.
• Stale feed looks like clean traffic: if the modular input stopped polling, the freshness panel shows STALE but correlation just stops matching new IOCs — monitor feed age and alert on it.
• Verification: seed the KV Store with a benign canary IOC (e.g., a test domain you control), generate a matching event, and confirm the correlation search produces an enriched notable with the expected threat_type/ti_source before trusting production coverage.
