Overview

ARP poisoning (ARP spoofing) is a Layer 2 attack where an adversary sends falsified ARP messages to associate their MAC address with the IP address of a legitimate host, enabling man-in-the-middle (MitM) interception, session hijacking, or denial of service. Since ARP has no built-in authentication mechanism, any device on a broadcast domain can forge ARP replies. Detection requires monitoring ARP traffic for anomalies such as gratuitous ARP floods, IP-to-MAC mapping changes, and duplicate IP addresses. This skill covers deploying multiple detection layers including ARPWatch, Dynamic ARP Inspection (DAI), Wireshark-based analysis, and custom Python monitoring tools.

Detection Gaps & Validation

• Unidirectional/half-duplex spoofing slips MAC-change checks: attackers poison only the victim (not the gateway), so a naive arp.opcode==2 watcher on one host misses it. Correlate both directions; flag any IP whose arp.src.hw_mac differs from the DHCP-snooping binding regardless of who was poisoned.
• Gratuitous-ARP-only detectors miss request-based poisoning: some tools spoof via ARP requests (opcode 1) with a forged sender MAC. Watch both opcodes — arp.opcode==1 or arp.opcode==2 with sender IP/MAC mismatch — not just gratuitous replies.
• Static-ARP and proxy-ARP hosts cause false positives: load balancers, VRRP/HSRP (virtual MAC 0000.0c07.acXX), and clustered NICs legitimately move an IP between MACs. Whitelist VRRP/HSRP virtual MACs and known failover pairs before alerting on "MAC flip-flop."
• Rate thresholds miss low-and-slow poisoning: one forged reply every few seconds stays under a 50-pkt/10s flood threshold but still sustains MitM. Alert on any binding change against the snooping table, independent of volume.
• Validate the detector fires: in an authorized lab, run arpspoof -i eth0 -t <victim> <gw> (or bettercap arp.spoof) and confirm ARPWatch logs changed ethernet address/flip flop, the Python monitor emits a CRITICAL gateway-spoof alert, and the switch increments show ip arp inspection statistics drops. No alert = capture isn't on the right broadcast domain or DAI trust is misconfigured.

Normal ARP Process:
1. Host A broadcasts: "Who has 10.0.1.1? Tell 10.0.1.100"
2. Router replies: "10.0.1.1 is at AA:BB:CC:DD:EE:01"
3. Host A caches the mapping

ARP Poisoning Attack:
1. Attacker sends unsolicited ARP reply to Host A:
   "10.0.1.1 is at EV:IL:MA:CA:DD:RR" (attacker's MAC)
2. Host A updates cache, sends traffic to attacker
3. Attacker forwards to real gateway (MitM position)
