When to Use

• When implementing advanced threat detection for high-value OT targets (nuclear, chemical, critical infrastructure)
• When building detection for APT-style attacks targeting PLC logic and process manipulation
• When establishing PLC logic integrity monitoring to detect unauthorized modifications
• When investigating suspected process anomalies that may indicate cyber-physical attacks
• When designing defense-in-depth strategies against nation-state level OT threats

Do not use for basic OT intrusion detection (see detecting-attacks-on-scada-systems), for malware analysis of Stuxnet samples (see malware reverse engineering skills), or for PLC programming and logic development.

Detection Gaps & Validation

• The logic change is invisible at the network layer once resident. Injected OB/FC/FB blocks only traverse the wire during the S7comm/CIP download; afterward only the physical process reveals manipulation. Network monitoring alone misses it — require periodic PLC logic integrity comparison against an offline known-good baseline (block count, size, per-block checksum).
• Spoofed sensors defeat single-source detection. Stuxnet froze and replayed readings to the HMI. Cross-validate independent measurements (VFD frequency vs reported RPM, power vs speed, vibration vs speed) so a spoofed tag contradicts physics rather than passing a range check.
• The engineering workstation and removable media are the entry, not the network. Air-gap bridging via USB and STEP 7/TIA Portal DLL hooking leave host artifacts (modified s7otbxdx.dll, unsigned binaries) that passive network sensors never see.
• Validate safely. Exercise integrity and physics checks against a lab PLC and recorded process data, and replay an attack scenario offline. Never inject logic or spoofed values into a production controller. Confirm a flagged block change maps to an unauthorized download and not a logged engineering revision.
