When to Use

• When enforcing device health as a prerequisite for accessing corporate applications
• When integrating CrowdStrike ZTA scores, Intune compliance, or Jamf device status into access decisions
• When implementing CISA Zero Trust Maturity Model device pillar requirements
• When building conditional access policies that adapt based on real-time endpoint security posture

Do not use for IoT or headless devices that cannot run posture agents, as a standalone security control without identity verification, or when real-time posture data is unavailable and stale compliance data would create false trust.

Common Misconfigurations & Verification

The classic failure is posture collected but never enforced - the dashboard shows ZTA scores and Intune compliance, yet access is granted anyway. Check for these:

• Signals ingested but not gated. CrowdStrike ZTA / Intune complianceState flow into the IdP, but no Conditional Access grant control requires compliantDevice, so non-compliant devices still authenticate.
• Report-only / grace-period policies left on. A CA policy stuck in "report-only" or an open-ended grace period logs violations without blocking.
• Stale posture treated as current. A device that last synced days ago is trusted; gate on lastSyncDateTime freshness or fail closed.
• BYOD / browser path bypass. Unmanaged devices route through a path with no posture check and reach the same data.
• Thresholds set so low (ZTA >= 30) they never deny.

How to confirm: take a deliberately non-compliant device (disable BitLocker/FileVault, stop the Falcon sensor, or roll back the OS) and attempt to reach a protected app - it must be blocked, not warned. Confirm the denial appears in Entra sign-in logs / Okta System Log with the posture reason, and verify a compliant device on the same account succeeds.
