When to Use

• When deploying zone-level firewall protection directly in front of critical PLCs or RTUs
• When requiring deep packet inspection of industrial protocols (Modbus, EtherNet/IP, OPC, S7comm)
• When implementing IEC 62443 zone and conduit boundaries with protocol-aware enforcement
• When protecting legacy PLCs that cannot be patched and need compensating controls
• When segmenting control network zones without disrupting existing industrial communications

Do not use for enterprise IT firewall deployment, for perimeter firewall between IT and OT (use Palo Alto/Fortinet at the DMZ), or for environments using only IP-based protocols without OT-specific DPI needs.

Common Misconfigurations & Verification

• Left in monitor/learning mode. A Tofino deployed inline but configured to log-only (or with an overly broad allow rule) inspects nothing. Verify the default-deny rule is last and that DPI policies are in enforcement, not test, mode.
• Fail-open vs fail-closed mismatch. Fail-open preserves process availability but means a failed appliance silently stops protecting; confirm the failsafe choice is deliberate and documented per zone, and that loss of the appliance raises an alert.
• DPI not actually filtering function codes. A Modbus allow rule that omits function-code restrictions passes FC5/FC6/FC15/FC16 writes; confirm read-only zones block write FCs and that S7comm CPU-stop (0x29) and program download (0x1A) are blocked for HMI sources.
• Purdue bypass around the firewall. A dual-homed engineering workstation or an unmanaged switch path lets traffic skip the Tofino entirely; enumerate multi-homed assets before trusting the boundary.
• Verify without disrupting the process. Validate during a maintenance window: from an unauthorized source attempt a blocked write (must be denied and logged) and confirm legitimate read polling still succeeds. Review blocked-packet and DPI-violation counters rather than injecting commands at a running controller.
