Overview

Network segmentation divides a flat network into isolated security zones with firewall-enforced boundaries to contain breaches, restrict lateral movement, and enforce least-privilege access between workloads. Segmentation is a foundational control required by PCI DSS, HIPAA, NIST 800-53, and zero trust architectures. Modern segmentation combines traditional VLAN-based approaches with microsegmentation at the workload level for granular east-west traffic control. This skill covers designing zone architectures, configuring inter-zone firewall policies, implementing VLAN segmentation on switches, and deploying microsegmentation for dynamic environments.

Common Misconfigurations & Verification

• Intra-zone lateral movement left open: zone firewalls only police traffic between zones; hosts in the same VLAN/zone talk freely unless you add an intra-zone deny (or private VLANs). Most projects block east-west between zones but forget within them.
• Implicit allow above default-deny: a broad permit ordered before Deny-All, or a missing Deny-Intrazone, silently opens paths. The deny-all rule must be last and logged.
• ACL direction/placement errors: ip access-group ... out vs in filters the wrong direction, and an ACL on the wrong SVI lets traffic in via an unfiltered path. Trace the actual flow direction per interface.
• VLAN hopping: trunks left on default native VLAN 1 or with DTP auto-negotiation allow double-tagging into protected VLANs. Set an unused native VLAN, switchport nonegotiate, and prune allowed VLANs.

Verification: test from both sides, not just config review. From a Corporate host, a connection to the PCI CDE (nc -z -w3 10.0.40.10 443) must be blocked and generate a firewall deny log, while an allowed flow (Corporate→Servers 443) must succeed. Run the validation matrix and confirm denied inter-zone attempts appear in the firewall log — a silent block with no log entry can mean the traffic took an unfiltered route rather than being denied.
