Overview

Common Misconfigurations & Verification

• Service application-default vs any: rules with service any let an app ride a non-standard port that App-ID hasn't classified on the first packets, so it "fails open" to a broad port-based rule below. Pin App-ID rules to application-default and place a tight Deny-All last.
• Decryption bypass via pinned apps: apple-update, microsoft-update, dropbox, and most mobile apps break under ssl-forward-proxy, so teams add over-broad no-decrypt rules that become blind spots. Keep exemptions app-specific, not whole URL categories; review the No-Decrypt rulebase.
• QUIC/HTTP3 escape: if UDP/443 is allowed, browsers tunnel over QUIC and skip TLS inspection entirely. Confirm a Block-QUIC rule (deny application quic) and check Traffic logs for quic/http3.
• Shadowed rules: a permissive early rule silently overrides stricter ones below it. Run Policy Optimizer and show running security-policy to find shadowed/unused rules.
• Silent denies: confirm the explicit Deny-All has log-end yes, or dropped traffic is invisible to the SIEM.

Core Concepts

App-ID Technology

App-ID classifies network traffic by application regardless of port, protocol, or encryption. The classification engine uses multiple identification techniques in sequence:
