Overview

NextDNS is a cloud-based DNS resolver that provides encrypted DNS resolution (DNS-over-HTTPS and DNS-over-TLS), real-time threat intelligence blocking, ad and tracker filtering, and granular DNS policy enforcement. In a zero trust architecture, DNS is a critical control point -- every network connection begins with a DNS query, making DNS filtering an effective layer for blocking malicious domains, preventing data exfiltration via DNS tunneling, enforcing acceptable use policies, and gaining visibility into all network communications. NextDNS processes queries using threat intelligence feeds containing millions of malicious domains updated in real-time, blocks cryptojacking and phishing domains, detects DNS rebinding attacks, and supports CNAME cloaking protection. For enterprise environments, Microsoft's Zero Trust DNS (ZTDNS) feature on Windows 11 extends this concept by enforcing that endpoints can only resolve domains through approved protected DNS servers.

Common Misconfigurations & Verification

DNS filtering is trivially bypassed, so a "deployed" NextDNS profile often protects nothing. Check for these:

• Plaintext DNS still allowed. If UDP/TCP 53 egress is not blocked at the firewall, endpoints silently fall back to 8.8.8.8 / 1.1.1.1 and skip NextDNS entirely.
• Browser built-in DoH overrides system DNS. Chrome/Firefox/Edge ship their own DoH (often hardcoded Cloudflare/Google) that ignores the NextDNS profile - disable it via policy.
• Wrong or missing config ID, so queries hit NextDNS's default resolver with none of your security or blocklist settings applied.
• No per-device identification (NextDNS CLI not installed), so logs cannot attribute a malicious lookup to a host.
• Logging disabled or retention set to "off," leaving no forensic trail.

How to confirm: from an endpoint run resolvectl query / nslookup for a known test domain and confirm it resolves through your config (the device and query appear in the NextDNS analytics dashboard). Then attempt a hardcoded 8.8.8.8 lookup and a DoH request to https://cloudflare-dns.com - both must fail or be redirected. Verify a known-malicious test domain is blocked and the block is logged.

Security Best Practices
