When to Use

• Interactive malware analysis is needed where the analyst must click dialogs, enter credentials, or navigate installer screens
• Rapid cloud-based sandbox analysis without maintaining local sandbox infrastructure
• Malware requires user interaction to proceed past anti-sandbox checks (document macros requiring "Enable Content")
• Sharing analysis results with team members via public or private task URLs
• Comparing behavior across different OS versions (Windows 7, 10, 11) available in ANY.RUN

Do not use for highly sensitive samples that cannot be uploaded to cloud services; use an on-premises sandbox like Cuckoo instead.

Detection Gaps & Validation

• ANY.RUN's datacenter IPs and known sandbox fingerprints get detected. Many samples geofence, check for the any.run task environment, or refuse to run on flagged IP ranges. Use the Residential Proxy option and pick an OS/locale matching the lure (e.g., Windows 7 for old droppers, RU/region for geofenced loaders) before concluding a sample is inert.
• The #1 miss is under-interaction. Non-interaction leaves macro docs, password-protected archives, multi-click installers, and "Enable Content" payloads dormant. You must click through every prompt, supply archive passwords, and complete installer screens — otherwise the process tree stops at WINWORD.EXE and you'll wrongly call it clean.
• HTTPS C2 is invisible without MITM. If MITM proxy is off, beacons show only TLS SNI/IP. Enable MITM to read decrypted POST bodies; enable FakeNet to coax behavior when live C2 is dead.
• Short timeouts miss sleep/time-bomb logic. Extend execution time and re-detonate; delayed-execution and scheduled-task payloads won't fire in 60s.
• Confirm cross-tool: validate dropped-file hashes on VirusTotal, correlate Suricata alerts with the ATT&CK map, and re-run on a second OS build to separate real behavior from environment-specific evasion.
• Benign-lookalike FPs: legitimate updaters, remote-admin tools, and signed installers trigger "stealer/trojan" tags from generic behavior — verify the C2 and dropped payloads, don't trust the verdict score alone.
