Detection Gaps & Validation

Persistence hunts fail by enumerating only the obvious autostarts. Cover the mechanisms below or you will declare a host clean while a backdoor survives:

• Beyond Run keys / cron / systemd. Check WMI event subscriptions (__EventFilter + CommandLineEventConsumer bindings in OBJECTS.DATA), COM hijacks (CLSID\...\InprocServer32 pointing to temp/appdata DLLs), DLL search-order hijacking, IFEO Debugger values, screensaver/Winlogon\Userinit/Shell keys, and services with ServiceDLL. On Linux, check LD_PRELOAD//etc/ld.so.preload, PAM modules (pam_exec), ~/.bashrc//etc/profile.d, authorized_keys, udev rules, systemd timers, and malicious kernel modules — not just crontab.
• Memory-only and fileless persistence. Registry-stored payloads, scheduled tasks running encoded PowerShell, and process-injected implants leave little on disk. An autostart entry pointing at rundll32/mshta/regsvr32 with a remote or encoded argument needs memory forensics (Volatility) to confirm what actually executes.
• Timestamps lie; corroborate. Registry key LastWrite and file mtime are stompable. Cross-check a suspected persistence entry against Prefetch/Amcache (did it execute?), Security 4697/4698/7045 (when installed), and the actual on-disk target (does the binary exist, is it signed?). An autostart whose target file is missing is either already-removed or fileless — investigate, don't dismiss.
• Baseline before judging. A typical host has 100+ auto-start services and dozens of scheduled tasks that are all legitimate. Diff against a known-good baseline (Autoruns hash compare) rather than eyeballing; signed Microsoft binaries in expected paths are not findings.
• Interpretation false positives. Legitimate software (updaters, drivers, AV) uses Run keys, services, and tasks. "powershell" in a task is not inherently malicious — decode the argument. Confirm a hit by detonating/sandbox-analyzing the target or matching its hash to threat intel, and verify removal by re-enumerating ALL vectors, not just the one you cleaned.
