When to Use

How to CONFIRM a Hit (avoid false negatives)

• Positive signal: each OWASP-API risk needs its own concrete proof that the protected behavior actually occurred — confirm in the response body/effect, never from a status code alone.
• Tie every finding to a specific confirmation step for that risk:
  • API1 BOLA: use a two-account diff — account A's token retrieves account B's object and returns B's real data (not an empty/403). Iterate IDs to show scope.
  • API2 Broken Auth: confirm alg:none/weak-secret JWT is accepted and grants access, or that brute-force has no lockout (many attempts, no 429).
  • API3 BOPLA / mass assignment: confirm the injected field (role:admin, balance) persisted by re-reading the object, plus confirm sensitive fields actually returned.
  • API4/6 rate limiting: confirm requests are processed past the expected threshold with no 429/throttle, and the side effect (OTP/email) actually fired.
  • API5 Function-level auth: confirm a low-priv token successfully executes an admin action (state changed), not just reached the route.
  • API7 SSRF: confirm via returned metadata content or an out-of-band callback, not a generic 200.
• Do NOT mark a risk "PASS" until you've tried method switching, alternate API versions (/v1 vs /v2), and ID/format variations (numeric, UUID, base64).

Common Scenarios

Scenario 1: BOLA in E-commerce API

User A can access User B's order details by changing the order ID in /api/v1/orders/{id}. The API only checks authentication but not authorization on the object level.

Scenario 2: Mass Assignment on User Profile

The user update endpoint accepts a role field in the JSON body. By adding "role":"admin" to a profile update request, a regular user escalates to administrator privileges.

Scenario 3: Deprecated API Version Bypass

The /api/v2/users endpoint has proper rate limiting, but /api/v1/users (still active) has no rate limiting. Attackers use the old version to brute-force credentials.

Scenario 4: GraphQL Introspection Data Leak

GraphQL introspection is enabled in production, exposing the entire schema including internal queries, mutations, and sensitive field names that are not used in the frontend.
