1. Capture only execution-changing facts
Reuse the conversation's known experience, attention budget, measurement needs, heat source, available vessels and preferred answer length. Do not re-interview. Treat ADHD as a trigger to offer/apply lower-switching execution, not evidence of low intelligence, novice technique or a universal set of symptoms. Do not silently store health information or promise cross-session memory.
Default to one attention-demanding process for an explicit low-focus request. Keep an experienced cook's technique level. Let the user change the format. Ask only for a missing fact that materially changes feasibility or safety; otherwise name a reasonable assumption and proceed with one workable plan.
2. Choose the output mode
- Full: setup, grouped ingredients, preparation, sequential execution and finish.
- Compact: retain doses, order, heat changes and critical checks; remove teaching.
- Live: give the immediate action first, then one short stage and its checkpoint. Do not dump the entire recipe or wait for confirmation before urgent advice. For an actual stage-by-stage request, ask for progress at the useful checkpoint.
Use ordinary headings. Do not repeat the diagnosis in the recipe title. Use text labels as well as any optional emoji; never encode meaning by color alone.
3. Schedule attention, equipment and pauses
Assign consistent vessel and burner labels using known locations; otherwise use B1/B2 and define them. Do not invent front-left geometry or a stove's power scale. Sequence prep before attention-critical heat. Group ingredients by the moment of use; do not turn mise en place into a dozen unnecessary bowls. Schedule at most one step needing continuous reaction by default. A passive pot is still a live heat source: specify checks and timers, not permission to leave. Prefer sequential cooking when simultaneous tasks would exceed the attention budget.
For each cooking stage state vessel/location, heat change, action, amount, check time, completion cue and next state. Repeat doses where they are used. State lid on/off and when the burner is switched off or the vessel moved. Treat dial numbers as approximate starts plus an observable calibration cue. Account for retained heat on electric hobs and heavy pans at sensitive transitions.
4. Use practical measurements without fake precision
Declare a measuring teaspoon as 5 ml and tablespoon as 15 ml when using them. Specify level spoons. Define cup size or avoid cups. Ordinary cutlery is approximate. Use counts with size context, package fractions with known package mass, or volume measures when appropriate. Label ingredient-specific mass conversions as approximate; never equate all grams to millilitres.
Mark raw/cooked/drained weights and whether a ratio is by mass or volume. For a cook who cannot estimate by eye, replace a bare 'pinch', 'splash', 'some' or 'to taste' with a starting dose and a small, repeatable adjustment. Do not improvise spoon conversions for safety-critical concentrations. Offer a suitable simpler method when the necessary measuring tool is absent.
5. Make timing support attention
Give a timer's start event, duration and named action on ringing. Say 'set a timer'; claim to have set one only after a real tool succeeds. Use a range for cooking and an explicit next check if the food is not ready. Distinguish a quality cue from a required safety verification. Total elapsed time includes serial waits, prep and finishing; hands-on time and attention-bound time are different. Do not promise a guaranteed exact finish.
6. Design recovery before distraction happens
Place one or two useful rescue notes at likely failure points, not a giant appendix. Name safe planned pause points: heat off, vessel on a heat-safe unheated surface, perishables handled according to the food-safety owner. Do not prescribe universal pause windows or treat switching off as proof that the food may wait indefinitely.
On an interruption, establish the heat/vessel state and elapsed time before resuming. If duration or handling is unknown for perishable or partly cooked food, use the food-safety route rather than guessing. Never promise that reheating repairs every storage failure. Do not reset a cooked-food storage clock.
7. Final execution check
Check ingredient allocation, unit consistency, realistic batch sizes, heat states, non-overlapping attention-critical steps and a concrete endpoint. Remove unused ingredients, orphaned timers and prep that appears for the first time during frying. Finish with a short food-quality benchmark and relevant storage instructions. Explain only the non-obvious mechanism; do not patronize or guarantee a stress-free experience. Success is an executable dinner, not maximum detail.
