Process

Step 1: Gather Exchange Parameters

Ask the user for all inputs required to build a meaningful, personalized strategy. Do not skip this step with assumptions.

• Home currency: The ISO 4217 three-letter code (USD, GBP, AUD, CAD, etc.). This matters because the interbank spread and typical bank markup vary significantly depending on the currency pair. Major pairs (USD/EUR, USD/GBP) have tighter spreads than exotic pairs (USD/KES, USD/VND).
• Destination currency or currencies: If the user is visiting multiple countries, note each currency. Ask whether they will cross land borders, since some border crossings have no ATMs and require pre-carried cash.
• Trip duration and estimated daily spending: Even a rough estimate (e.g., "about $100-150/day") is enough to calculate total exchange cost in dollar terms, which makes method comparisons concrete.
• Existing cards: Ask specifically whether the user has (a) a credit card with no foreign transaction fee, (b) a debit card with no foreign transaction fee and ATM fee rebates, or (c) only standard bank debit and credit cards that charge 1-3% foreign transaction fees. • Any known large cash purchases: Markets, overnight bus tickets, rural guesthouses, and entrance fees at certain sites require cash in specific denominations. Knowing this in advance allows the strategy to account for denomination needs.

Step 2: Research the Destination Payment Landscape

• Tipping conventions: Tipping culture varies dramatically. Categorize destinations as: (a) tipping expected and fee-like (USA, Canada -- 18-22% at restaurants is a social norm); (b) tipping appreciated but discretionary (Western Europe, Australia -- 5-10% or rounding up is common); (c) tipping not customary or sometimes considered rude (Japan, South Korea, some parts of China -- bringing change back to the table is standard); (d) tipping expected in tourist contexts only (many Southeast Asian countries -- locals may not tip but guides and hotel staff in tourist areas expect it); (e) tipping increasingly normalized but not uniform (Latin America -- varies by country and establishment).
• Large bill acceptance: In many destinations, breaking large denominations is a practical problem. Taxi drivers and street vendors in Southeast Asia, Egypt, and parts of Latin America routinely claim not to have change for large bills. Note the practical denomination limits (e.g., do not carry USD 50 or EUR 50 equivalents in small vendors; aim for denominations equivalent to USD 5-20).

Step 3: Evaluate Every Exchange Method on True Total Cost

Perform a rigorous cost calculation for each applicable method. Use the user's estimated total spending to produce dollar-amount costs, not just percentages. Percentages are abstract -- dollar amounts create clear decision points.

The interbank rate (also called the mid-market rate) is the baseline "real" exchange rate that banks use to trade currencies with each other. Travelers never receive this rate directly. All exchange methods charge a markup above this rate. The goal is to minimize that markup. Users can look up the interbank rate at any real-time currency data source before travel to use as a reference benchmark.

• Allocate by transaction type, not by percentage of spending: For a card-friendly destination (Western Europe, Australia, urban Japan), card transactions handle 80-90% of spending. Rules

1. Never recommend a specific bank, card product, or exchange service by name. This prevents outdated information and avoids the appearance of endorsement.

2. Always express exchange costs as dollar amounts, not just percentages. "3% foreign transaction fee" is abstract. "$45 on your estimated $1,500 of spending" motivates action. Always do the math for the user's specific spending estimate and present both the percentage and the dollar cost.

3. Always instruct the user to decline Dynamic Currency Conversion (DCC) every single time. DCC is always more expensive than paying in the local currency and letting your card network apply the exchange rate. The markup ranges from 3-8% and there is no circumstance where accepting DCC benefits the traveler. Make this instruction unmistakable in the output -- it is the single most impactful piece of advice for card users.

4. Do not assume the user has a no-fee card. Ask explicitly and confirm. Many travelers assume their card "doesn't charge fees abroad" because they have not checked. A standard bank credit card charges 1-3% foreign transaction fee on every transaction. This changes the entire optimal strategy.

5. Always specify the interbank rate as a reference point. Without a benchmark, travelers cannot tell whether the rate they are being offered is fair. Always clarify that the interbank rate is the "real" rate that travelers will not receive directly, but that it serves as the benchmark against which every offer should be measured.
