Japanese Arrangement and MIDI Uchikomi (打ち込み, MIDI Programming) Techniques
This skill consolidates the arrangement and uchikomi (打ち込み, MIDI programming) methodology of professional Japanese composer-arrangers: guruubu (グルーブ, groove) design, realistic part-writing for each instrument, engineer-style arrangement thinking, and dance/Trap beat production.
Core creed: "Understand how real instruments are actually played, and reproduce that" — all realistic uchikomi is built on imagining the physical constraints and habits of a live performer.

I. Guruubu (Groove) Principles and Parameters
1. The Six Adjustable Parameters That Constitute Groove
The groove spectrum: left end = ochitsuita kanji (落ち着いた感じ, calm and gentle), right end = kouyoukan / nori no yosa (高揚感・ノリの良さ, uplift and infectious feel).

- To change the nori (ノリ, groove/feel): adjust tempo first; transposing up or down by roughly a 3rd also transforms the mood dramatically.
- The most drastic move: change the time signature (4/4 → 3/4) — anyone listening will say the nori has clearly changed.
- At the same BPM, when strong notes and high notes are emphasized the track "feels faster" — finalize the tempo only after the timbres are roughly in place.
2. Suingu (スイング, Swing / Bounce)
- Definition of "haneru (跳ねる, bouncing)": in a run of consecutive notes, odd-numbered notes are long, even-numbered notes are short (tat-tat → tat-ka).
- 2:1 = shaffuru (シャッフル, Shuffle — triplet feel).
- 3:1 = more hurried and tense — the "ka" interval gets squeezed and the sense of speed increases.
- Real players actually land on floating in-between values like 2.5:1 or 2.6:1, with tiny wavering on every repetition — this is the source of the comfortable feel.
- DAW quantize functions let you set by percentage how far the "ka" is pushed back; but if the performance is good, don't quantize at all.
- Sutakkaato (スタッカート, staccato) ≠ bounce: rhythm is a matter of "when a note starts"; staccato only shortens the note's tail.
- Guitar and bass suit swing better than keyboards (on a keyboard, re-striking the same note with the same finger makes the timing hard to control).
3. Rizumu Hassou (リズム発想, Rhythm-First Thinking) vs Koodo Hassou (コード発想, Chord-First Thinking)
- Piano singer-songwriter types easily fall into "chord-first thinking" (holding long chords and humming a melody over them) → songs all sound alike and get shackled to bar-length units.
- Build the rhythm first, then write the song: the left-hand motion is naturally determined by the Kick (キック, kick drum), chords may move 3 times per bar, and the chord progression is derived from the nori — this is the fundamental cure for mannerika (マンネリ化, falling into a rut).
- Genre = rhythmic convention (マナー, "manner"): rokku (ロック, rock) = crisp 8-beat; hausu (ハウス, house) = Kick yotsu-uchi (四つ打ち, four-on-the-floor); regee (レゲエ, reggae) = emphasis on beats 2 and 4 with the offbeats often carrying a triplet feel.
- Start the earliest stage of an arrangement with the target genre's rhythm pattern, and the uwamono (うわもの, upper-layer parts) will naturally lock into the rhythmic character. Example: once the 8-beat drum kit is assembled, have the bass and distorted guitar chug along with the 8th-note hi-hat.
- Once fluent, blend (ブレンド) beats from different genres, or deliberately layer another genre's uwamono over the rhythm — the path to a signature arrangement.
4. Groove Doesn't Come Only from Drums
- With the bass playing shuffle while the drums stay straight (Kick on 1 and 3 / Snare on 2 and 4), the whole track still swings.
- Adding ghost notes (ゴーストノート — extremely short, extremely quiet notes at the threshold of audibility) to the bass instantly fills a plain quarter-note drum track with groove.
- Guitar ghost notes via kara-pikki (空ピック, dead-stroke / muted pick strokes) are also effective; on keyboards, tuck extremely short notes into the gaps of the accompaniment with a similar dead-stroke feeling.
- Reference: D'Angelo "How Does It Feel" — the drums are a straight drum machine; the groove comes entirely from the bass, guitar, and vocal "tame" (タメ, laid-back dragging/behind-the-beat delay); even the sense of air functions as rhythm.
- Compressing the drums down to minimal accents paradoxically makes the drums feel more present; when snare/conga/shaker parts are programmed too densely, the delicate bass and guitar phrases get buried instead.
5. Reproducing Band Nori in MIDI: Guruubu Kuontaizu (グルーブ・クオンタイズ, Groove Quantize)
- Principle: "Align firmly where alignment is required; everywhere else, prioritize the nori."
- Must be aligned to the grid: the first note of each bar, yunizon (ユニゾン, unison passages), and kime (キメ, unison hits/ensemble accents).
- For everything else, set quantize offset strength by note value: 16th notes 5%, 8th notes 3%, quarter notes 1%.
- Cymbals (シンバル) and the toms (タム) in fill-ins: shift them even further than the set values.
- Boldly shift the obbligato (オブリガート) lines of bass and keys as well, to make them "sing."
- Audio recordings such as guitar: perform along with the finished MIDI tracks, "aligning the starts as much as possible while prioritizing the nori."
- Sound-stage side: use a Room-type reverb to reproduce heya-nari (部屋鳴り, room resonance) — once the drums and upper instruments contain room sound, the atmosphere emerges.
- Run the dry signal and the room signal together through a compressor — reproducing the studio effect where "even the air gets compressed." If the bass is treated as a line recording (ライン録音, DI), it can go without room sound.
6. "Ma" (間, Space/Rest) and Note Length
- The instant a regularly sounding note breaks off = "ma," delivering stimulation and refinement.
- Experiment: in an ongoing 8th/16th hi-hat pattern, stop the hi-hat for one beat at a position where neither Kick nor Snare plays.
- Groove = the "wave" born from the push and pull of a repeating rhythm; bold, forceful music needs big waves, and big waves need strong beats plus space.
- Note length itself is groove (timing is only one element of groove):
- Audio material: trim each note's tail so it fits the note-value grid (align to the 16th grid in a 16-beat tune) → tight (タイト).
- MIDI: adjust each note length according to "the player's sense of breathing," e.g., cutting notes short on the offbeats; pay attention to where the performance places its emphasis.
- Synths/samplers: adjust the envelope generator's Release.
- Audio: compressors, geeto (ゲート, Gate), and transient-shaper effects that specifically adjust Attack/Release.
- Even a flat (スクエア, square) beat can groove:
- Build the same track from velocity variation plus multiple samples — create "perceived micro-deviations in the beat" and turn them into groove.
- Dotted-8th direi (ディレイ, delay): the decaying delay repeats form dynamics; the dry notes and effect notes interweave intricately.
- Setting reverb puri-direi (プリディレイ, pre-delay) to a 16th-note length (an on-beat value) gives a "sticky, cohesive" atmosphere.
7. Rhythmic Development in Loop Music
- Over a repeating motif, drive development through rhythm (unbound by the phrase's pitches):
- Add and remove rhythm instruments to create rise and fall.
- Downbeat Kick yotsu-uchi → add offbeat (裏拍, ura-haku) accented hi-hat → the perception of the beat becomes multi-layered (the reverse order also works).
- Start with only 8th-note rhythms, then introduce 16th phrases midway; with hane (ハネ, bounced/swung feel), the effect is even bigger.
- Extreme examples: doramun-beesu (ドラムンベース, drum and bass) which reinterprets the rhythm in double-time, and 2-step (2ステップ) which allows two interpretations at once.
- The same applies to pitched parts: after an 8th-note motif, add 16th phrases that fill the offbeat gaps.
- Program the 16th-note offbeats of a sequenced phrase at the 301 tick timing position to create bounce.
- Raise the 16th-offbeat notes in the gaps of a bass motif by 1 octave to highlight them.
- Keep the initial phrase sparse in note count, leaving room to add notes later (or work in reverse: start from a note-count-MAX state and subtract).
II. Drums
1. Realistic Uchikomi Workflow for Acoustic Drums (生ドラム, nama-drums)
- Rough-in the basic pattern (Kick / Snare / closed hat / open hat).
- Add snare ghost notes: low velocity, placed mainly on the 16th-note offbeats (裏, ura) — simulating the drummer's left hand tapping lightly and busily.
- Adjust velocity per piece: mind the accents on Kick and Hi-hat; give the Snare subtle dynamic variation on beats 2 and 4.
- Use groove quantize to shift every note off the grid except the first Kick — a human can never align every note value perfectly; chasing excessive precision actually destroys the band feel.
Timbre processing after bouncing to audio:
- Export Kick / Snare / Hi-hat to separate audio tracks.
- On the Kick, use a compressor with a lengthened release — bringing out the drumhead resonance.
- Put sachureeshon (サチュレーション, saturation) on the Snare and Hi-hat for gritty texture — the snare wires (スナッピー) get emphasized and the acoustic feel increases.
- Add a reverb simulating studio room sound (insert the reverb on an AUX; feed each part via SEND).
- Group (グルーピング) into a 2-mix and apply bus compression or a makishimaizaa (マキシマイザー, maximizer) to the whole.
2. Velocity (ベロシティ) Design Rules
- Hi-hat (the single biggest point): on-beats (オモテ, omote) strong, offbeats (ウラ, ura) weak, shaping the velocities into a "mountain" contour — the machine feel vanishes instantly.
- Kick: keep velocity basically constant (it stabilizes the song). But on 16th-note double strokes / two-note runs, weaken the preceding note — a human cannot stomp twice in a row at full power.
- Snare: keeping beats 2 and 4 at a consistent velocity is sufficient. Furamu (フラム, flam — a grace note before the main hit): set the velocity of the flam grace note on beat 3 quite low; assuming a right-handed drummer, raise the velocity of the on-beat notes struck by the right hand.
- In a 16-beat, remove the Hi-hat at the instant the Snare is struck (no overlap) — closer to a real player (the physical limit of two hands).
- Shortcut operation: batch-lower the velocity of all offbeat notes and the nori appears immediately; further differentiate the velocity values of the offbeats of beats 1 & 3 versus 2 & 4 for an even finer groove.
- Make velocity contrast a bit more exaggerated than feels right to you — the compressor will compensate the power later.
- Yotsu-uchi + offbeat open-hat pattern: invert the on/off-beat velocity relationship (offbeats stronger) to create "yoko-nori" (横ノリ, horizontal sway — as opposed to "tate-nori" 縦ノリ, vertical jumping); emphasize the offbeat Snare and open hat rather than the Kick.
3. The "Two Hands, Two Feet, Max 4 Notes" Premise
- A drummer can sound at most 4 notes simultaneously; during a snare roll they cannot also strike a cymbal (the hi-hat pedal note is the exception).
- In uchikomi, treat this limitation as the great premise on purpose — only by not relying on note count can you build drums with merihari (メリハリ, dynamic contrast); today's mainstream is precisely arrangement that doesn't stack notes.
- In a guitar-rock context, ghost notes may be deliberately omitted (done poorly they make the song "tame"); per-note velocity awareness matters more.
4. The Basic 8-Beat Pattern and 5 Variations
Programming every note aligned to the 1/8 grid is the rock standard (exceptions: slow Loud/Mixture styles and songs with Trap elements). Variation techniques:
- Once every 4 or 8 bars, add a kurasshu shinbaru (クラッシュ・シンバル, crash cymbal) on the bar head.
- In any section, swap the Hi-hat for a raido shinbaru (ライド・シンバル, Ride).
- In showcase sections (見せ場, miseba — chorus/intro highlights), switch the Kick to yotsu-uchi (four-on-the-floor).
- Likewise in highlight sections, swap the offbeat closed hat for an open hi-hat (オープン・ハイハット).
- In the B-section / ochi-sabi (落ちサビ, subdued final chorus), halve the rhythmic feel of Kick & Snare (haafu tenpo, ハーフ・テンポ, half-time).
The ③+④ combination is the most powerful, instantly making the song catchy — most guitar-rock hits use this move. Below roughly BPM 140: use shuffled hi-hats plus 16th notes embedded between Kick/Snare for a bouncing rhythm — more "ima-fuu" (今風, current-sounding).
5. Firuin (フィルイン, Fill-in)
- The main reason beginners' songs feel monotonous = no fills (the drum pattern copy-pasted to the end).
- Placement: once every 8/16 bars, or at changes in the song's flow, as "accent punctuation."
- 4 methods from easy to hard:
- 16th-note snare roll (スネア・ロール);
- Move the roll onto the toms (タム) (adds pitch contour);
- Kick/Snare/Tom struck together — "DAN!" — and if the other instruments hit the same rhythm in unison it becomes a kime (unison hit), even cooler;
- When striking together, slightly offset the timing of each piece (live-feel).
- The key inside a fill is changing the Kick and Cymbal patterns — the Kick may even drop out entirely during the fill; never habitually machine-gun the cymbals and Kick — leave spectral space for the snare/toms.
6. Electronic Drums and Sound Selection
- Choose sounds by "what in the whole kit you most want heard": House styles put the weight on the Kick (solid and punching forward), Rock styles on the Snare (cracking out); using attention-grabbing sounds for everything makes them interfere and turn messy.
- Always program on separate tracks (one each for Kick/Snare/Hi-hat). Benefits: easy mix-level adjustment, individual processing (low-cut the Kick / heavily compress the Snare / shared effects via bus SEND), easy MIDI-edit navigation, and easy sound swapping.
- Blend in bureiku beetsu (ブレイクビーツ, breakbeats — chopped-up break samples) to inject a "live" groove feel: use sampled phrases only at fills; or let them ring faintly, ghost-note-like, inside the "oto no sukima" (音のすき間, gaps in the sound) of the programmed notes. The trick to coexisting beats: avoid overlapping sounds as much as possible.
- Instrument reference: XLN AUDIO Addictive Drums 2 — Japanese guitar rock actually tends to use its Funk-type kits (the kits named for overseas Rock have a "zudaan!" impact that is too strong for light, nimble Japanese songs).
- YOASOBI-style club-inflected yotsu-uchi: the standard is the ROLAND TR-909 Kick and HiHat (search presets for "909").

III. The Bass Line — "The Core of the Arrangement"
1. Basic Discipline
- Role: support the main melody while conveying both groove and harmonic sense.
- Instruments: SPECTRASONICS Trilian (34GB library; covers synth/electric/acoustic bass), IK MULTIMEDIA Modo Bass (physical modeling). For rock choose a pick-played (ピック弾き) sound with strong attack; for Electro-Swing etc. use fingerstyle (Finger) or slap (击勾弦, Slap).
- Lower range limit = the open E of the 4th string; do not write lower notes (Down-Tuning is the exception).
- Playing at the same timing as the Kick is the iron rule of rock — doing just this already sounds convincingly rock; misalign it and the rock feel evaporates.
- Base the part on 8th-note chugging; single-note roots (ルート) are the foundation.
- Adding 3rds in the low register muddies the sound (ごりごり, gori-gori) — when moving, basically use 5ths or 7ths (unless muddiness is intentional).
- Lower the offbeat velocities; bass gets deeply compressed in the mix, so make the velocity contrast even more exaggerated than it feels or it won't survive.
2. Building the Phrase Step by Step from the Kick Relationship (5-Step Densification)
- Place root notes only on the downbeats.
- Add notes to match the Kick exactly — including Kicks that jump onto offbeats, matched precisely → a large boost in groove feel.
- Introduce the common tone shared by all the chords (often also a frequent melody note), placing it as much as possible at the same position in every bar → the phrase becomes riff-like, and that note begins to function as a pedaru (ペダル, pedal tone).
- Fill in the empty beats, giving the bass a "continuously flowing" note count.
- Push the note count to extremes in either direction — very effective when driving the climax at the song's ending (エンディング).
3. Passing Tones and a Library of Note-Choice Techniques
- Conditions for a keikaon (経過音, passing tone) to work: it is sandwiched by chord tones before and after, the phrase connects as a line, and it doesn't clash with other parts or the melody; returning to a chord tone yields a "tension → release" surprise (chromatic ascent such as G♯→A is classic).
- Note-choice expansion order: root → 5th (the most stable note after the root, always safe) → 3rd, 7th (arpeggio-style approach) → fill between chord tones with scale notes (melodic approach).
- Octave jumps (オクターブ): alternating low/high octaves is a staple. Caution: if the high-octave (offbeat) note's velocity is too strong it drifts toward the Disco "ura-uchi bass" (裏打ちベース, offbeat bass) and weakens the rock feel.
- Second-chorus variation: raise the whole section an octave; or split it into raised and non-raised portions to create contrary leaps; or start the phrase from the chord's 7th (a half-step or two below the root).
- Micro-adjusting note values (横の変化, "horizontal variation"): at a resolution of ♩=960 ticks, an 8th = 480 ticks and a 16th = 240 ticks; micro-adjust the lengths of consecutive 8th notes (slightly shorter/longer) — the notation looks unchanged, but the ear perceives a whiff of shinkopeeshon (シンコペーション, syncopation).
- Ghost notes: stuff extremely short, extremely quiet notes into the rest positions and the "live feel" jumps immediately; if the instrument has key switches (キー・スイッチ), place furetto noizu (フレット・ノイズ, fret noise) at those positions.
- Slides (スライド): the "doon↓" effect-like glissando, common before a chorus or in an intro:
- Set the picchi bendo (ピッチ・ベンド, pitch bend) range to 12 semitones or more first (up to 24 is fine);
- Give the note roughly a quarter-note length and draw a smooth descending arch curve (an arc sounds better than a straight line);
- An extremely short note placed just before the start also works; a real bassist shifts along the frets, but the difference is inaudible — a smooth curve is enough.
- The slide is a kime-no-oto (キメの音, featured accent note) — it only works if the surrounding instruments quiet down when it appears.
- Walking Bass in three steps (jazz):
- On each chord change, make the 1st note the root (jazz also often starts from the 3rd or 5th for tension);
- Immediately before it, place a leading note (リーディング・ノート) a half step below or above — half-step motion is the source of the "jazz flavor" (in practice, whole-step approaches from above or below are also very common);
- Fill the middle with scale notes.
- Avoid looping an overly short bar cycle; enter it manually as much as possible to bring out subtle differences; sing along while building the line.
IV. Guitar
1. Tone and Range
- Three electric-guitar gain stages: kuriin (クリーン, Clean) / kuranchi (クランチ, Crunch) / haigein (ハイゲイン, Hi-Gain).
- Uchikomi strategy: don't reach for a high-gain patch right away — lay the foundation with a Clean tone and create Crunch/Hi-Gain via an anpu shimyureetaa (アンプ・シミュレーター, amp simulator) for better controllability.
- Acoustic guitar: suchiiru-gen (スチール弦, steel strings) are brilliant; nairon-gen (ナイロン弦, nylon strings) have a strong attack transient — use per scene.
- Instruments: MUSIC LAB Real Guitar 2L, VIR2 Acoustic Legends HD (acoustic, with built-in strumming patterns); PROMINY (SC/LPC/Hummingbird), AMPLE SOUND, MAGIX Independence; general-purpose example: Cubase HALionOne "Clean Guitar VX" + amp simulation / teepu sachureeshon (テープ・サチュレーション, tape saturation) processing.
- The lower range limit is E like the bass but one octave higher; lowered tunings make the sound loose, so writing below E is not recommended outside metal.
- The electric guitar sounds few simultaneous notes — mostly single lines or near-single lines — which actually makes it easier to fake; it is the "wall" of the backing tracks.
2. Realistic Strumming (ストローク) in Three Steps
- Lay out the chord blocks, adding a 16th-note anticipation strum just before each chord change — at this point it is beta-uchi (ベタ打ち, flat robotic input), mechanical and groove-less.
- Offset the sounding time of each string:
- Downstroke (ダウン・ストローク) = strings sound low to high in order (6th → 1st string);
- Upstroke (アップ・ストローク) is the reverse (1st → 6th);
- On-beats = downstroke, offbeats = upstroke is the basic direction rule (when unsure, making everything downstrokes still sounds fine);
- The offset amount is found by ear per tempo and instrument (event-list example: strings at 1, 15, 28, 45, 63 ticks…).
- Adjust velocities: the string the pick touches first is loudest, decreasing thereafter (downstroke: low strings strongest; upstroke: the reverse); from the pattern's flow, the first strum after a chord change is loudest and the offbeats (裏拍) are weaker.
- Practical tip: save your strumming MIDI as a template (ひな型, hinagata) and adapt/reuse it per song.
3. Don't Write Guitar with Keyboard Thinking — Kairi Waon (開離和音, Open Voicing)
- A one-hand keyboard chord = a close voicing within one octave; the guitar's open strings span 2 octaves from 6th-string E to 1st-string E, so a single strum covers a huge range — inherently a kairi waon (開離和音, open voicing).
- Conversion methods: shift some chord tones up/down an octave to spread them; exploit tenkaikei (転回形, inversions); for keyboard-style within-octave arpeggios, raise the root an octave.
- Core: consciously widen the intervals, and never let the low register get dense — the single step of "opening up the intervals in the bass region" already gets you noticeably closer to how a guitar rings.
4. Burijji Myuuto (ブリッジ・ミュート, Bridge Mute / Palm Mute) and Pawaa Koodo (パワー・コード, Power Chords)
- The alternation between long tones (ロング・トーン) and muted notes constitutes guitar-style rhythm — an essential characteristic of the instrument.
- The mute plays roughly the role of pichikaato (ピチカート, pizzicato) in classical music — a key articulation for expressing kankyuu (緩急, tension and release).
- Faking mutes on a generic instrument: extremely short notes + low velocity; in muted sections reduce the chord-tone count and center on the low strings (4th–6th), while keeping the strum time-offsets.
- Power chord = root + 5th (omit the 3rd): the harmony stays clear even in distorted haze, a unique world neither major nor minor; it pairs best with palm mutes; some instruments trigger a full power chord from a single MIDI note.
- Hidden usage ①: in Crunch/Clean cutting (カッティング, cutting/chops) songs, layer a thin muted-guitar track underneath the strums — reproducing "the resonance of the low strings that weren't actually struck"; guitar realism rises.
- Hidden usage ②: in big strummed chorus sections, thinly layer a muted guitar doubling the bass line (ベース・ラインとそろえる) to reinforce thickness — programmed guitar tends toward thinness, so keep "seasoning" from multiple angles.
- Rhythm-chord essentials: keep the strum offsets and emphasize the velocities of the lowest and highest notes (slightly boosting the two outer notes instantly sounds more like a guitar).
5. Electric Guitar Riffs and Arpeggios
- Riff royal road: hold a sustained low pedal note (e.g., G) while a 4th dyad moves above it; the treatment of the pedal note's velocity and the lengths of each note decides whether it "sounds real."
- Arpeggio (アルペジオ) key: exploit open strings (開放弦, kaihougen) — for half-step-adjacent notes (e.g., F♯ and G), G can be assigned to the open 3rd string; hence, know the tuning of each string.
- An arpeggio is not staccato: hold each note until the chord changes or until the next note on the same string is struck.
- Common Crunch-backing pattern: chug the low strings in 8th notes, but let the chord's top note ring without cutting it.
- Velocity programming with emotion (エモーション) matters just as much here.
V. Keyboard / Piano
1. Real-Time Input and Quantization Strategy
- Recommended: play in real time (リアルタイム入力) to a metronome, then check pitch, durations, and velocity in the piano roll.
- Quantize strategy: first fix only the "must-align" spots such as bar heads; leaving the rest unquantized is more natural (especially anticipations/pickup rushes (早弾き) and kakeagari (駆け上がり, upward run-up) phrases).

2. String Arranging Essentials (Gen-karu 弦カル, string quartet: 1st Vn / 2nd Vn / Viola / Cello)
- Common pop problem ①: cello and bass collide in range → the cello gets buried in the mix. Fix: use a close (クローズ) voicing to push the cello into a higher register; if necessary, simply remove the cello.
- Problem ②: violins written too high cover the vocal.
- Alternate between close (クローズ, within one octave — stable but hard to move) and open (オープン, beyond the octave — roomy intervals, parts move freely): switch to kairi (開離, open) voicing at the build-up before the chorus (サビ, sabi) to create breadth; switch flexibly with the melody.
- For the chorus's counter melody (カウンター・メロディ), use octave unison (オクターブ・ユニゾン) to strengthen intensity and assert presence.
- Suggested workflow: first write the counter-line (violin etc.) against the vocal melody, then use it as the axis to assign chord tones to the other instruments → horizontally coherent, musical part-writing; actively adopt 7ths and tensions (テンション).
- The worst approach: playing block chords with a single "string ensemble" patch — that will never produce string expression; at minimum split into the four quartet parts with separate patches and tracks; layering multiple violin patches is also recommended.
- Kakeagari (駆け上がり, upward run-up): quantize nothing except the first note for realism; decide the peak note first and design the phrase backward from it (run-ups climbing strictly by semitones are rare); the volume curve (ボリューム・カーブ) drawing is critical; loop-audition and adjust volume and velocity note by note.
- When long-tone strings/organ join a guitar/vocal texture, the formula is placing them above both guitar and vocal in range (roughly C5–C6).
- The inverse staple: in sparse sections such as the B-melo, let low-register strings substitute for the bass part.
- Making a part "sing": repeating the same note in halves/quarters turns monotonous — the ear forms memory around melodic motion; use neighbor tones (刺繍音, shishuuon), passing tones, and other non-chord tones to move just a little, and the expression changes immediately.
3. Two Core Theories of String Writing

- Find the common tone between adjacent chords — the note that "can keep sounding unmoved even as chords change" (example: a G held across 8 chords, serving variously as 5th, ♭7th and root, 9th, 11th, etc.).
- The common-tone device is the staple of staples in string writing; if stasis feels dull, move it slightly or insert occasional rests.
- Adding "a little tension flavor" to the original progression is exactly the strings' job — don't lean on theory; sound the notes against the backing and hunt empirically.
Theory 2 — the "call-and-response" (kauntaa fureezu, カウンター・フレーズ, counter phrase) theory:
- Moving at the same time as the main melody is NG (like interrupting someone mid-sentence); strike answering short phrases in the melody's gaps — such lines are called kauntaa fureezu (counter phrase / カウンター・ライン counter line / オブリガート obbligato).
- When blending into a band, avoid range collisions with other instruments and add only the lines you want highlighted, at 1–2 voices; for more power, reinforce with octave doubling.
Universal counter-melody rules (shared with vocal/instrumental counter-lines):
- When the main melody moves a lot, the counter-line holds still; when the main melody sustains or rests, the counter-line moves.
- Avoid collisions with the melody, especially half-step relationships.
- Favor contrary motion (melody up, counter down); occasional crossing is also effective; don't hover in nearby intervals forever — leap boldly or shift an octave.
- First frame it with only 2 notes per bar, then connect and densify; insert rests to change the rhythm (equivalent to breathing points).
4. Three Elements of Orchestral Realism
- Timbre: use modern software instruments (simulating a full orchestra); listen to real orchestras extensively to absorb their character.
- Placement (pan): synth patches all sitting dead center by default = NG (they'll also collide with the vocal and solo instruments). Correct layout: 1st Violin front-left, 2nd Violin rear-left, Viola rear-right, Cello front-right, Contrabass far rear-right, conductor at center.
- Player-count feel: the subtle "zure" (ズレ, offsets) between real players is exactly what thickens the sound — do unison doubling with large-ensemble patches; then stack brass sections and percussion (Snare Roll, Flam, Timpani Roll, Cymbal Crash) for massive impact.
