Layout
- Top — headline status and the one or two outcome metrics
- Middle — leading indicators and trend, not just current value
- Bottom — health metrics (delivery pace, risk count, blocker age)
- Always — targets and baselines alongside actuals
Method
- Design for the reader who has ten seconds
- Show trend and target, not a number floating in space
- Use colour sparingly and only with a legend
- Make "so what" obvious — what should the reader do?
- Automate the data or it will go stale
Best Practices
- A number without a target is trivia
- One screen; if it scrolls, it's a report not a dashboard
- Annotate anomalies so readers don't guess
