How to actually write the copy: headline formulas, visual design principles, and the process for gathering real customer language before writing anything. Applies to LinkedIn and Meta ads.

Rule #1: Write From the Customer's Mouth, Not the Product's Marketing

The single biggest mistake in ad copywriting is writing from the brand's marketing language instead of the customer's actual words.

What this looks like in practice:

• Brand voice: "Real-time visibility across all business units" (product marketing)
• Customer voice: "I used to spend 6-8 hours a week on reporting. Now it takes 15 minutes." (how they actually talk)

The brand voice describes features. The customer voice describes the transformation in their daily life. The customer voice wins every time because it mirrors what the ICP is thinking and feeling.

The rule: Before writing a single line of ad copy, gather voice-of-customer data. Use their words, not yours.

Voice of Customer: Where to Get It

Gather real language from these sources before writing ad copy. Ranked by quality:

Tier 1: Direct Customer Language

1. G2/Capterra/TrustRadius reviews - real users describing problems and outcomes in their own words. Look for the "before" state (what was painful) and "after" state (what changed).
2. Sales call transcripts / discovery call notes - how prospects describe their problem before they know the solution. This is gold because it's unfiltered.
3. Customer testimonials / case studies on the website - curated but still in customer language. Look for specific numbers and outcomes.
4. Support tickets / onboarding feedback - how users describe confusion or value in real-time.

Tier 2: ICP Language in the Wild

5. Reddit threads where the ICP discusses the problem (e.g., relevant subreddits for your category)
6. LinkedIn posts from ICP personas complaining about or discussing the problem
7. Conference talks / webinar transcripts where ICP personas discuss challenges

Tier 3: Competitive Intelligence

8. Competitor reviews on G2 - what people say they wish the competitor did better
9. Competitor ad copy - pull from Meta Ad Library, Google Ads transparency, LinkedIn via API

What to Extract

From every source, extract:

• Pain phrases - how they describe the problem ("I was drowning in spreadsheets", "checking 5 different tools every morning")
• Outcome phrases - how they describe the result ("game changer", "saved me hours", "I finally have clarity")
• Specific numbers - any quantified before/after ("6-8 hours to 15 minutes", "20 days faster onboarding", "seven-figure savings")
• Emotional words - the feelings around the problem ("stress", "anxiety", "frustration", "overwhelmed")

The Headline IS the Creative

This is the #1 visual pattern across top-performing B2B ads on LinkedIn and Meta.

What This Means

The majority of top B2B ads don't use photos or stock imagery as the primary visual. The headline text itself is designed as the main graphic element.

• Bold, chunky sans-serif typography
• One sentence max on the image
• Headline text takes up 50-70% of the image area
• Readable at thumbnail size (which means readable during fast mobile scrolling)
• Solid color background, minimal additional elements

Why It Works

• Delivers the message even when people scroll fast and don't read the body copy
• Creates pattern interrupt against photo-heavy feed content
• Forces copywriting discipline - if you only have one sentence, every word matters
• Works across all device sizes without cropping issues

Visual Design Principles

Color distribution across top B2B ads:

• Dark backgrounds (navy, black, dark purple) with white/bright text: ~40%
• Bold bright backgrounds (neon green, hot pink, bright yellow, electric purple, coral): ~35%
• Light/white backgrounds: ~15-20%

Key insight: Bright color ads pop the most against LinkedIn's white feed. They're more distinctive than dark backgrounds.

What to include on the image:

• One headline sentence (the hook)
• Brand logo (small, corner)
• Optional: CTA button embedded in the image
• Optional: One accent color for emphasis on key words

What NOT to include on the image:

• Multiple messages or bullet points
• Stock photography
• Complex multi-element layouts
• Product feature lists
• Small text that requires zooming

Six Headline Formulas

Extracted from top-performing B2B LinkedIn and Meta ads. Each formula works at different funnel stages.

1. The Feeling Formula

Write about how the problem FEELS, not what the product does.

Structure: [Desired state], not [current pain state].

Examples:

• "Insights, not anxiety."
• "Less pinging. More progress."
• "Peace of mind, not spreadsheet panic."

Why it works: Taps into the emotional reality of the ICP's daily experience. Creates instant recognition ("that's exactly how I feel"). The contrast between desired and current state is implicit motivation.

Best at: TOF / Problem-Aware. Works when the ICP knows something is wrong but hasn't named the solution.

How to write it:

1. From your VOC data, find the emotional words (stress, anxiety, overwhelm, frustration)
2. Find the desired emotional outcome (clarity, confidence, control, calm)
3. Compress into: "[positive emotion], not [negative emotion]"

2. The Conversation Formula

Recreate a moment the ICP has actually lived through. Show the scene, not the solution.

Structure: A short dialogue or scenario that the ICP recognizes from their own experience.

Examples:

• "We closed another deal from branded search" / "Let's double down on Google Ads" / "Pretty sure they heard about us on LinkedIn first" / "Google closed it" (attribution confusion between marketer and CEO)
• "Board: 'What's our current position?' / You: 'Give me a day to pull the numbers.'"
• "'Can you send me the report by EOD?' / opens 4 spreadsheets, 3 dashboards, and a prayer"

Why it works: The ICP thinks "that's literally what happened to me last week." It mirrors their internal experience so precisely that they feel seen. No selling needed - the scenario does the work.

Best at: TOF / Problem-Aware. Especially effective for problems the ICP has normalized ("everyone does it this way") because the conversation format holds a mirror up.

How to write it:

1. From your VOC data or sales call transcripts, find a specific recurring moment
2. Write it as a 2-4 line dialogue or scenario
3. The punchline should land on the pain, not the solution
4. The product is never mentioned in the conversation - it's implied

3. The Contrast Formula

Old way vs new way, compressed into the fewest possible words.

Structure: "No more [pain]. No more [pain]. Just [outcome]." OR "Less [pain]. More [outcome]." OR "[Old approach] --> [new reality]."

Examples:

• "No more trawling hotel sites. No email ping-pong. Just one easy platform."
• "Ditch the spreadsheets, scale faster."
• "6-8 hours on weekly reporting --> 15 minutes."
• "Less manual work. More strategic decisions."

Why it works: Creates a before/after in the reader's mind without needing a visual before/after. The contrast is the selling. Words like "no more" and "less" give permission to let go of the old way.

Best at: MOF / Solution-Aware. Works when the ICP already knows the problem and is ready to hear that an alternative exists.

How to write it:

1. From your VOC data, find the specific activities the ICP hates (the "before")
2. From customer outcomes, find the specific result (the "after")
3. Compress into one of the three structures above
4. Use the ICP's own words for the pain activities, not marketing language

4. The Shame Formula

Make the current approach feel outdated without being preachy.

Structure: Frame the status quo as embarrassingly old or behind the times.

Examples:

• "Stuck in a static format from the 90s."
• "9 reasons to stop using PDFs for business content."
• "Your leadership expects real-time reporting. You're building it in Excel."
• "It's 2026. Why is your forecast still in a spreadsheet?"

Why it works: Nobody wants to feel behind. This formula creates social pressure to modernize without directly attacking the reader. The implication is "you should know better" but the tone is observational, not accusatory.

Best at: MOF / Solution-Aware. Works best when there's a clear "old way" the industry is moving away from (spreadsheets, manual processes, legacy tools).

How to write it:

1. Identify the "old way" your product replaces (spreadsheets, manual processes, legacy tool)
2. Frame it with a time reference ("from the 90s", "still", "It's 2026")
3. The shame should be light and observational, never aggressive or accusatory
4. Test with: "Would I be embarrassed if a colleague saw this describing MY process?" If yes, it works.

5. The Stat Interrupt Formula

A single, specific number that makes the ICP stop and do math in their head.

Structure: One dramatic number, designed large on the image. The number IS the creative.

Examples:

• "6-8hrs --> 15min" (giant text, weekly reporting context below)
• "20 fewer days to close."
• "Seven figures in optimization found."
• "4.3" (rating as the focal point)
• "6-10 people make up the typical ops team"

Why it works: Numbers are pattern interrupts in a text-heavy feed. They force the reader to pause and contextualize ("how does that compare to MY situation?"). The reader does the selling to themselves.

Best at: Any stage. Works especially well when the number comes from a real customer outcome (VOC data). Stat must be specific and verifiable - round numbers feel made up.

How to write it:

1. From your VOC data, find the most dramatic specific number (time saved, money found, days reduced)
2. Design the number as the visual - make it the largest element on the image
3. Add minimal context underneath so the reader knows what the number refers to
4. The body copy / headline field provides the full story

6. The Pain + Outcome Formula

The problem and the result compressed into one single short sentence.

Structure: [Pain verb] the [old thing], [outcome verb] [result].

Examples:

• "Ditch the spreadsheets, scale faster."
• "Admin shouldn't be your full-time job."
• "Stop the manual updates. See your data in real time."
• "Cut the busywork. Get clarity in minutes."

Why it works: Efficient. Acknowledges the pain and promises the result in under 10 words. No wasted space. The reader immediately understands: "If I stop doing X, I get Y."

Best at: MOF-BOF / Solution-Aware to Product-Aware. Works when the ICP already knows the pain and is ready to hear the outcome.

How to write it:

1. Pick ONE specific pain activity from VOC data (not a vague problem, a specific activity)
2. Pick ONE specific outcome from customer data
3. Compress into a single sentence, ideally under 10 words
4. Use strong verbs: ditch, cut, stop, drop, kill, end / get, gain, unlock, see, build

The Copywriting Process (Step by Step)

Use this process every time you write ad copy. Do not skip step 1.

Step 1: Gather Voice of Customer Data

Before writing anything, pull real customer language from the sources listed above (G2 reviews, testimonials, sales calls, etc.). Extract pain phrases, outcome phrases, specific numbers, and emotional words.

Minimum requirement: At least 5 real customer quotes before writing any ad copy.

Step 2: Identify the One Idea

Each ad communicates ONE idea. Not two, not three. One pain point, one outcome, one stat, or one emotion. If you're trying to say two things, make two ads.

Ask: "If the reader remembers only one thing from this ad, what should it be?"

Step 3: Choose the Headline Formula

Based on the one idea and the funnel stage, pick the formula that fits:

• Feeling formula for emotional pain recognition (TOF)
• Conversation formula for normalized problems (TOF)
• Contrast formula for old way vs new way (MOF)
• Shame formula for outdated approaches (MOF)
• Stat interrupt for dramatic customer outcomes (any)
• Pain + Outcome for direct response (MOF-BOF)

Step 4: Write the Image Text First

The image text is what people see while scrolling. It must work standalone. Write the one sentence that goes on the image before anything else.

Test: "Would this sentence make someone stop scrolling even without the body copy?" If no, rewrite.

Step 5: Write the Body Copy

The body copy (commentary field on LinkedIn, primary text on Meta) expands on the image text. It should:

• Use verified brand language and product phrases
• Add context the image couldn't fit
• Include social proof if relevant
• End with a clear next step (not always a hard CTA - sometimes curiosity is enough)

Step 6: Write the Headline Field

The headline field (below the image on LinkedIn) supports the image text. It should NOT repeat the image. Common approaches:

• Customer name or social proof ("How one VP of Operations transformed their workflow")
• Outcome stat ("From 6-8 hours a week to 15 minutes a day")
• Direct CTA ("See how 8,000+ teams made the switch")

Step 7: Audit Before It Goes Live

Run the finished ad through a final quality check across five layers: factual accuracy, tone of voice, structure, design density, and audience fit.

Common Mistakes

1. Writing from the brand's marketing language

• Wrong: "Real-time consolidated visibility across all entities"
• Right: "See your entire operation - every team, every metric - updated in real time" (customer language)

2. Feature headlines instead of pain/outcome headlines

• Wrong: "Automated Weekly Reports From Live Data"
• Right: "6-8 hours on reporting. 15 minutes with the right tool."

3. Too many ideas on one ad

• Wrong: image shows 3 features, body lists 5 benefits, headline adds social proof
• Right: one idea, expressed three ways (image, body, headline each reinforce the same single point)

4. Generic pain questions

• Wrong: "Struggling with data management?"
• Right: "Your board asked for a forecast. How long did it take?"
• The first is a category question anyone could ask. The second is a specific moment the ICP has lived.

5. Vague outcome language

• Wrong: "Make smarter decisions"
• Right: "We found seven figures in optimization" (customer quote)
• Specific > vague. Every time.

6. Designing the image around a photo instead of the headline

• Wrong: Stock photo of executive at desk with small text overlay
• Right: Bold text on solid color background, headline IS the visual
• Exception: If you have genuine customer photography or a product screenshot that tells the story
