Build Influencer Marketing Strategy

The mental model — the expertise curve

Influencer marketing has a U-shaped cost curve and an inverted-U trust curve. Strategy is finding where they cross.

The mid-tier expert creator is the default allocation. These are practitioners with a real job title in the buyer's field — a RevOps lead posting about attribution, a CFO posting about SaaS spend, a recruiter posting about hiring tools. Their audience is 60–80% ICP-dense because expertise filters followers. A macro creator's audience is broad by construction; a mid-tier expert's audience self-selected for the exact problem you solve.

Never build a strategy on follower count. Build it on audience-ICP overlap × posting expertise × engagement authenticity.

Step 0 — Lock the brief

Before anything, restate the brief as WHO + WHAT + PROOF + BUDGET:

1. WHO — the ICP persona the creators must reach (title, industry, geo, company size). If the org sells to multiple personas, ask which one this campaign targets.
2. WHAT — the action expected from the audience: demo booked, trial started, waitlist signup, category awareness. Different actions need different creator archetypes.
3. PROOF — what the creator can credibly say: a use case, a metric, a before/after, a personal test of the product. No proof means no post worth paying for.
4. BUDGET — monthly envelope in euros or dollars. This determines the creator mix, not the other way around.

Push back if the user asks for "big influencers" without a pipeline rationale. A 200K-follower generalist produces impressions; a 25K-follower practitioner produces meetings. Surface the tradeoff explicitly before obeying.

Step 1 — Map the audience, not the influencers

Start from the buyer, work backwards to the creators:

1. List 5–10 accounts or communities where the ICP already spends attention (LinkedIn voices they follow, newsletters, Slack communities, podcasts).
2. For each, note the recurring themes that get engagement from ICP-titled commenters.
3. Extract the 3–4 content angles the ICP demonstrably cares about. These become the campaign themes creators will post on.

This step prevents the classic failure: picking creators the founder admires instead of creators the buyer follows.

Step 2 — Build the creator portfolio (60/30/10)

Allocate the budget as a portfolio, weighted to the sweet spot:

60% — MID-TIER EXPERT CREATORS (10K–80K, practitioner credibility)
      Core pipeline engine. 4–8 creators posting 1–2×/month each.
      Selection bar: current or recent operator role in the ICP's function,

10% — ONE MACRO ANCHOR (80K+, only if budget >€5K/month)
      Air cover for a launch moment or category narrative. One creator, one
      moment. Skip entirely below €5K/month — reallocate to mid-tier.

Rules for the portfolio:

• Never let one creator exceed 25% of monthly budget. Creator performance has high variance; diversification is the hedge.
• Prefer 6 mid-tier experts over 1 macro at equal spend. Six credible voices repeating a message in the same feed week creates the surround-sound effect that one big post cannot.
• Expertise is a hard filter, not a bonus. A creator without operating credibility in the buyer's domain is excluded from the 60% and 30% buckets regardless of follower count or engagement rate.

Step 3 — Score every candidate creator

Score each candidate 1–5 on four axes before any outreach:

1. ICP density — sample 30 recent commenters; what share carry ICP titles? (≥40% = 5)
2. Expertise signal — do they hold or recently held the role they post about? Do posts contain specifics only a practitioner would know?
3. Engagement authenticity — comments are substantive questions from real profiles, not pods trading "Great post!"
4. Content-product fit — can the product appear in their content without breaking their voice?

Drop anyone scoring ≤2 on ICP density or expertise, whatever their reach. A high-reach low-expertise creator is the most expensive mistake in B2B influencer marketing: real money for an audience that will never buy.

Step 4 — Price with flat fees, not CPM

CPM pricing imports B2C logic into a B2B motion where a single closed deal repays the whole campaign. Use flat fee per post:

• Micro expert: €80–€200 per post.
• Mid-tier expert: €200–€600 per post.
• Macro anchor: €800–€2,500 per post.
