Multi Threading Coach

Purpose & When to Use

Single-threaded deals die. The champion goes on leave, changes jobs, loses an internal fight, or simply gets busy — and the deal goes dark with them. Gal's point is blunt: you win across a buying committee, not through one person. Multi-threading is not "cc more people." It is deliberately building a coalition — mapping who is involved, understanding who you can actually reach (access) versus who actually moves the decision (influence), and closing the gaps between them.

This skill coaches that motion. It maps the committee, scores every contact on access and influence, exposes single-thread risk, and produces a concrete coalition plan: who to reach, how, and what to say to each of them.

Run this skill when any of these are true:

• The deal runs entirely through one contact.
• You cannot confidently name who owns the decision, the budget, or the veto.
• A champion just went quiet and you have no other thread.
• You are entering a bigger, multi-stakeholder buying process (security, procurement, finance, exec sponsor all in play).
• You want a plan to reach a high-influence person you currently have no access to.

Do not treat this as a reason to spam the org. Multi-threading is coalition-building, not blast outreach. Each new thread needs a reason to exist and something in it for that person.

Procedure

Inputs you need

Collect these before scoring. Where you don't know something, do not guess — mark it [CONFIRM WITH CHAMPION], because only the buyer truly knows their own org, and make filling it a coalition task.

• Deal context: company, deal stage, value if known, the outcome the buyer wants.
• Every stakeholder you know of — champion, economic buyer, users, IT/RevOps, security, legal, procurement, finance, exec sponsor — with name, role, and how you know them.
• Your current relationship with each: have you spoken? met? only cc'd? never contacted?
• What each person cares about — their function's priorities and what "yes" requires from them.
• Known blockers or skeptics and why.

If your only real input is one champion, that itself is the finding — go straight to the single-thread risk flag in Step 3 and build the plan to widen.

Step 1 — Map the full buying committee

List everyone involved in the decision, not just the people you like talking to. For each, capture name, role, the "buyer job" they own (evaluate, use, secure, approve budget, sign), and current stance (supportive / neutral / skeptical / blocker / unknown). Roles you know exist but can't name become [CONFIRM WITH CHAMPION] — the champion fills the name, not you.

Step 2 — Score each contact on Access and Influence

For every stakeholder, assign two independent scores. Keep the scale simple (High / Medium / Low, or 1–3) and be honest — inflating access is how deals get surprised.

• Access — how directly and reliably can you reach this person? High = you have a real, two-way relationship. Medium = you've been introduced or can get to them via the champion. Low = you know they exist but have no path yet.
• Influence — how much do they move this specific decision? High = they decide, fund, or can veto. Medium = they shape the outcome or gate a step. Low = they're consulted but don't move it.

Step 3 — Plot the 2x2 and flag single-thread risk

Place each contact on the access × influence grid:

• High access + high influence — your true champions/backers. Protect and equip them.
• Low access + high influence — the priority gap. These are the people who decide the deal and you can't reliably reach. Closing these is the core of the coalition plan.
• High access + low influence — friendly but can't carry the deal. Useful for intel and intros, not for closing. Don't mistake their enthusiasm for progress.
• Low access + low influence — deprioritize.

Then flag single-thread risk explicitly: if all your high-access contacts are one person, or if every high-influence person sits in the low-access column, the deal is single-threaded and fragile. Name it as a risk with the consequence ("if [champion] goes quiet, we have no thread to the economic buyer").

Step 4 — Build the coalition plan

For each stakeholder worth engaging, write a concrete move:

• Priority: low-access / high-influence — the path to reach them. Prefer a champion-led intro ("would you introduce me to [name] so I can address [their concern] directly?") over cold outreach. Give the champion a reason that helps them, not just you.
• For each thread — a one- or two-line, persona-specific talking point framed around what that person cares about (security cares about risk and review burden; finance about ROI and scenarios; the exec sponsor about the strategic outcome; users about their day getting easier).
• Protect your backers — equip high-access/high-influence champions to sell internally: give them the case, don't just lean on them.
• Sequence it — which threads to open first, and which depend on an intro landing.

Never invent a stakeholder's name, priority, or a relationship you don't have. A coalition plan built on imagined access is how reps convince themselves a dead deal is alive.

Step 5 — Set the re-check cadence

Access and influence change as the deal moves — new people enter, sentiment shifts, a champion gets promoted or sidelined. State a cadence to re-map (typically at each stage gate or when a new stakeholder appears) so the coalition stays current instead of frozen at first contact.

What it produces

A single coalition plan containing:

• Buying committee map — everyone involved, with role, buyer job, and stance.
• Access × Influence scores — for every contact, honestly scored.
• The 2x2 — contacts plotted, with the low-access/high-influence priority quadrant called out.
• Single-thread risk flag — explicit, with the consequence if the current thread breaks.
• Coalition plan — per-stakeholder move, intro path for high-influence gaps, and a persona-specific talking point for each thread.
• [CONFIRM WITH CHAMPION] items — unknown names, roles, and priorities, as coalition tasks.
• Re-check cadence — when the map gets refreshed.

What Good Looks Like

A great coalition plan makes the deal robust to any one person disappearing. There are at least two live threads into the decision, the economic buyer is someone you can actually reach (or there's a concrete, in-motion plan to reach them), and every thread has a reason to exist that helps that person, not just you. The rep can point at the 2x2 and say, without flinching, "here's who decides, here's who I can reach, and here's exactly how I'm closing the gap."

Signs it's working:

• More than one high-access thread, and at least one path to every high-influence person.
• The champion is making introductions because you gave them a reason that serves them.
• Talking points are per-persona, not one pitch copy-pasted to everyone.
• The single-thread risk got named early and got fixed, not discovered at close.

Signs it's off track:

• Every access score is "High" — the rep is flattering themselves.
• The plan is "add more people to the thread" with no per-person reason or talking point.
• High-influence people sit unaddressed in the low-access column with no intro plan.
• Enthusiasm from low-influence contacts is being counted as deal progress.
